TOP TIPS: Saving Energy

TOP TIPS: Saving Energy

When it comes to energy bills, we’re all looking for ways to save money besides switching our suppliers. There are lots of ways to reduce our consumption and start saving energy, here are some of our top tips for making sure your home is more energy efficient!

In the kitchen

  • Making a cup of tea? Only fill the kettle with as much water as you need.
  • Choose a pan that’s the right size for your cooking ring and remember, you only need the flame to be big enough to heat the base of the pan.
  • Make sure your taps are properly turned off and fix a dripping tap right away, otherwise it won’t just be water going down the drain.

With the heating

  • Keep radiators clear, from drying clothes and furniture, the sofa might look nice in front of your radiator but it will absorb a lot of the heat.
  • Use your central heating timer to turn the heating on and off so your heating only comes on when you need it to.
  • If you have high ceilings, place a shelf above the radiator, this will help deflect the heat into the centre of the room.

Hot water and Electricity

  • Energy saving bulbs can last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs but that doesn’t mean you can leave the lights on longer.
  • Make sure all your electrical appliances are turned off at the plug when you’re not using them, some appliances still use energy when they’re plugged in, even if they’re switched off.
  • Keep your water cylinder warm and invest in a cylinder jacket.
  • Does your shower take hot water straight from the boiler? Think about fitting a water efficient shower head! This can reduce your hot water usage while retaining the sensation of a powerful shower.
