What landlords need to know and the good news for the industry…
There had been calls for the Government to suspend Right to Rent checks completely during the Covid-19 outbreak, but the Government has responded by making temporary changes to ensure these checks can still be undertaken whilst adhering to guidance on social distancing. The Government has stressed that it remains an offence to knowingly lease premises to a person who is not lawfully in the UK.
This is a good result for the industry to know that move-ins are still possible where it is essential for tenants, and that this can be done safely in line with social distancing measures.
Changes introduced, as of 30 March 2020 are:
1 – Checks can be carried out as video calls.
2 – Tenants can send scanned documents or a photo of documents for checks using email or a mobile app, rather than sending originals.
3 – The Landlord’s Checking Service should be used where a tenant cannot provide documents.
